The University of Nairobi, a body corporate established by an Act of Parliament Cap 210 of the Laws of Kenya is the pioneer institution of University education in Kenya and the region. The focal point of this partnership within the University of Nairobi is the Institute for Development Studies (IDS).
The Institute for Development Studies (IDS) is one of the oldest and best-established research institutes in Africa. IDS is a multipurpose and multi-disciplinary institute within the University of Nairobi’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. It focuses on social and economic issues of development in Kenya, the rest of Africa and the world. In addition to initiating its own academic and policy-oriented research, IDS provides research services to government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
IDS builds capacity for the analysis of development issues through its MA and PhD programmers. It uses its seminar series, workshops, and publications to communicate and get feedback on its research results.IDS also encourages intellectual exchange through collaborative research and welcoming research associates.
The institutions seek to;
- Promote the exchange of information and materials relating to the development of programmes implemented as part of their cooperation.
- Exchange of academic faculty and administrative staff, research faculty and staff, visiting scholars, students as mutually agreed upon.
- Engage in Joint research activities and provision of briefing.
- Host African Leadership Centre (ALC) fellows on attachment at the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) and engage in curriculum development to include in its courses aspects on peace, leadership and security.
- Host public lectures at the University of Nairobi by eminent Africans who participate in the ALC’s Network of mentors.
- Provide office space and other facilities for ALC operations as agreed
- Nominate post-graduate students from the IDS and /or participating UON units to participate in lectures and related summer school programmes at the Kings College London.
- Access to ALC Library services for Institute for Development studies students and vice-versa.
- Provide space within the University of Nairobi or IDS Library to set up a virtual library for the benefit of all ALC Fellows and post-graduate students at IDS/ University of Nairobi.
- Provide lecture halls for ALC programmes as well as offer mentorship to ALC fellows.
- Facilitate the process of entry visas for the fellows and visiting scholars of the ALC into Kenya.
