Sonja Theron awarded PhD from University of Pretoria

Dr. Sonja Theron

The African Leadership Centre is very pleased to announced that ALC Alumna Dr. Sonja Theron has completed her PhD Politics programme at the Department of Politics Sciences, University of Pretoria. She passed her examination on 14 June 2018 and graduated on 5 September 2018. Many congratulations to Dr Theron!

Her thesis was titled "Understanding Peaceful and Violent Nation-building through Leadership: A Case Study of South Sudan". It examines nation-building in societies plagued by identity-related conflicts, specifically in South Sudan. By using the leadership process approach, the study contributes to a better understanding of nation-building and how it influences both conflict and peace processes. An analytical framework which conceptualises nationhood and provides a theoretical understanding of leadership is developed and used to understand South Sudan’s nation-building trajectory from its early history up to the ongoing civil war.

Sonja is currently doing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship with the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria. ALC's collaboration with the University of Pretoria has been increasing in exciting ways over the past few years, including the launch of our Joint PhD Leadership and Security Studies, and Sonja has been key to assisting with developing that partnership during her PhD studies and in her current role.

Very many congratulations again to Dr Theron from all at ALC!
