Eric Blanco Niyitunga - PhD Completed

Eric Blanco Niyitunga successfully completed his doctoral studies on 9th November 2016. His thesis is titled: Exploring the Challenges of the African Union-led Mediation in Peace Processes: The Cases of Burundi, Libya and Zimbabwe. The thesis sheds light on the role of the African Union in Mediation, and the challenges (internal and external) that prevent the AU from owning mediation processes and having autonomy over the outcome. It argues that mediation is ultimately an academic endeavor that requires professionalism, expertise and experience, and should therefore be undertaken by scholars who are academically grounded in the field.

Eric is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Johannesburg where he will continue to work. He is also in the process of establishing an "Institute of Mediation Studies (IMS)" in the Great Lakes Region, particularly in Burundi.
