Dr. Awino Okech

Awino Oketch

Dr. Awino Okech is a thought and process leader who holds a PhD in critical gender studies from the University of Cape Town with research interest in the interface between sexuality, culture and nationalisms. Awino has been involved in development work for the last twelve years in Eastern Africa, the Great Lakes region, and South Africa focusing on women’s rights in conflict and post conflict societies, security sector governance and governance more broadly.

Dr. Awino contributes to knowledge production and transfer through an adjunct teaching position with the African Leadership Centre - Kings College London and a range of academic and policy publications such as the 2010 co-edited volume Women and Security Governance in Africa and the Africa Peace and Conflict special journal (2013).

She is a member of Feminist Africa’s editorial board as well as an advisory board member of the African Peacebuilding Network, an initiative of the Social Science Research Council
